The NFL Thanksgiving game schedule in 2017 is arguably the highlight the entire slate of Week 12 contests (with the exception of a big NFC tilt Sunday). Cowboys vs. Chargers (4:30 p.m. ET on CBS) comes with postseason implications as the 2017 NFL playoff picture becomes more clear.

The 2017 installment of Thanksgiving Day football features a triple header for the 12th consecutive season. The tradition of Thanksgiving Day and NFL football in general, however, is more historic. On Thanksgiving in 1925, a crowd of 36,000 (then the largest in professional football history) watched the Chicago Bears play the Chicago Cardinals to a scoreless tie at Wrigley Field. In 1934, the Detroit Lions and the defending world champion Bears played on Thanksgiving in the first NFL game nationally broadcast (NBC).

This year, the Lions will play their 78th Thanksgiving Day game dating back to 1934, while the Cowboys will play in their 50th since 1966. The Giants and Redskins will play in their 15th and 10th games, respectively, on the holiday. The Vikings will play in their eighth and the Chargers will play in their fifth Thanksgiving game.

Los Angeles Chargers at Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving Game

Thursday marks the first Thanksgiving Day meeting between the Chargers and Cowboys. The Chargers are making their fifth appearance on Thanksgiving Day and their first since 1969. The Chargers’ 48-year gap between Thanksgiving Day appearances is the longest in NFL history.

Cowboys tight end Jason Witten, who will play in his 15th Thanksgiving Day game this week, has 73 catches on the holiday, the most of all time. His 809 receiving yards trail only Herman Moore (834) for the most on Thanksgiving.

Chargers vs Cowboys Game Picks, predictions for Thanksgiving Day 2017

Week 12 of the 2017 NFL season will feature a marquee Thanksgiving Day game on Thursday, November 23, 2017 (11/23/17) when the Los Angeles Chargers take on the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Kickoff time:  4:30 p.m. on CBS.

The Chargers are led by head coach Anthony Lynn, quarterback Philip Rivers, running back Melvin Gordon and pass rusher Joey Bosa. Los Angeles comes into the game with a 4-6 record.

The Cowboys are led by head coach Jason Garrett, quarterback Dak Prescott, and wide receiver Dez Bryant. Dallas is coming in off a Week 11 loss vs. the Eagles, and heads into the contest with a 5-5 record.

Here’s how our experts see the game playing out: –

James Kratch: Remember when the 0-4 Chargers beat the 0-4 Giants at MetLife Stadium? Things have continued to go downhill since then for the Giants, but the Chargers have, amazingly, worked their way back into the AFC playoff hunt. Los Angeles is 3-2 since it beat the Giants and is coming off a 54-point explosion against the Bills. The Cowboys are a mess with their injuries and suspensions. Upset alert. Chargers 24, Cowboys 23.

Darryl Slater: The Cowboys have slipped lately, losing back-to-back games, to fall to 5-5. And they were pounded in those games – 27-7 against the Falcons and 37-9 against the Eagles. Life without Ezekiel Elliott will not be easy for Dallas. But the Chargers are a pretty crummy team that improved to 4-6 last week thanks to the Bills foolishly starting Nathan Peterman at quarterback. Cowboys 24, Chargers 10.

Joe Giglio: The Cowboys always seem to find a pulse on Thanksgiving. This year, they’ll need one to save the season from totally slipping away. The winner of this game is in the hunt, while the loser is all but done before December arrives. Cowboys 23, Chargers 21.
